When Steve and I started living together we lived in the foothills in Layton. He told me to be careful because there were tarantula's. I told him he was a liar and to prove it I called my dad (after all Leroy the science teacher knows everything) who said he had never seen one. Steve said his ex-wife caught one in their backyard..again I called B.S. We have been together six years and I have yet to see one...until now.
My mother in law found this in her furnace room....
Lucky for her it was already dead but holy crap. Just to give you an idea of how big this spider is look at it in comparison to my cell phone.
Grandma is so nice to save all the strange things she finds for Salem. Salem is completely fascinated and I am totally freaked out. So I stand corrected these things really do exist!

Holy crap, that is the scariest thing I have ever seen!! I thought hobos were bad!!! yuk.
Yowza, I cannot even tell you how fast I'd be moving out of that neighborhood if I saw one of these. That is truly horrifying.
I thought it was fake when Salem brought it over yesterday...GROSS!
I hope that my bug spray guy is spraying potent enough stuff for those...nasty..
Oh my... please tell me you are joking. So when you put your shoes on do you shake them out first?
I didn't believe when you told me how big it was! EWWWW! If I found that thing in my house i wouldn't be able to sleep. How sweet of Salem's grandma to save it ;)
Holy Shit Chantel! I am so grossed out, how did you even get near this thing?
I thought Buck Tooth Bill's place was bad with all those hobo's... but this? Girl, how is Salem fascinated with this thing.... UGGHHHH!
I'm so freaked out, I gotta go!
I get these up the street from my house all of the time, this time of year we find them dead in the leaves when we rake!! These are not so scary, the little ones that you can't see are the ones you have to watch out for!! Of course I'd catch a live one and keep it as a pet...so don't listen to me.
Tarantulas
True tarantulas don't live east of the Mississippi. Several types of tarantulas call Utah home, and they are especially numerous around the Topaz Mountain area along the Thomas Range in Millard County.
"The tarantula is regarded as kind of the gentle giant of the spider world," McNally says of the hairy, fist-size spiders. "It usually has to be provoked to bite, and the bite creates only local symptoms -- redness and inflammation."
Perhaps of more concern is a little-known tarantula defense system involving the release of so-called "urticating hairs."
"They create a burning, itching type of rash on our skin," McNally says. "A tarantula might employ this form of defense before biting us and wasting its venom on something that's not a viable meal."
Generally, the Tarantulas that people spot are mature males, wandering around in search of a mate. If you live in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Utah, or Nevada, you may have some of these fuzzy spiders living in your midst. Don’t worry, U.S. Tarantulas are harmless to humans. They only prowl around at night, since they are nocturnes, and they only like to climb into kids’ beds. (Just kidding about the last part!) But, if you do run into one, don’t kill it– just gently brush it into a jar with a paintbrush, or something with a long handle and a soft end– then deposit him someplace else. Tarantulas are actually beneficial creatures who rid us of cockroaches and vermin.
Fierce as they may seem, these spiders actually are quite fragile. They can be injured if they fall, and they are particularly sensitive when they molt each year. Don’t you think they have a much scarier reputation than they deserve? You might not be dying to sleep with one in your bed, but you might not be so afraid of slow crawling, dangerous looking, furry spiders anymore either, right?Right?
HOLY SHIT that spider freaks me out just looking at it. I didn't think Utah had that big of spiders YUCK!! Ya i think i would be moving from that area for sure. ha ha
